Frequently Asked Questions

Expert Lighting Design, Clearly Explained

Thoughtful lighting design starts with the right questions. Here are answers to the ones we hear most often.

What does a lighting designer do?

A lighting designer creates a coordinated plan for how light will be used throughout your home. This includes fixture selection, placement, control systems, and lighting scenes that support both the architecture and how you live in the space.

When should lighting design begin during a project?

Lighting design is most effective when it starts early. Ideally, we collaborate with your architect, builder, and interior designer before electrical plans are finalized so the lighting can be fully coordinated with the architecture and layout.

Do I need a lighting designer if I already have an architect or interior designer?

Yes. Lighting design is a specialized discipline. While architects and interior designers shape the space, a lighting designer ensures the light itself supports the architecture, materials, and daily use of each room.

What types of projects do you work on?

We primarily work on luxury residential projects in the Hamptons and New York City. Many of our projects involve new construction, major renovations, or homes where lighting plays a central role in the design.

Do you help select fixtures and lighting products?

Yes. We guide fixture selection to support the overall lighting intent while accounting for practical requirements such as output, beam spread, and installation conditions.

Can lighting be integrated with smart home systems?

Yes. Many projects include intelligent lighting control systems that allow you to adjust scenes, automate schedules, and manage lighting from keypads, mobile devices, or integrated home systems.

Do you work with architects, builders, and interior designers?

Absolutely. Lighting design works best as a collaborative process. We regularly coordinate with architects, builders, interior designers, and electricians to ensure the design is carried through properly.

Do you only design the lighting, or do you also handle installation?

We provide the lighting design and coordinate closely with the installation team. Through our partnership with Home Technology Experts, intelligent lighting systems can also be installed and integrated as part of the broader project.

Can you help with existing homes and renovations?

Yes. While many projects begin during new construction, we also design lighting for renovations and existing homes where thoughtful improvements can significantly enhance the space.

How do we get started?

The first step is a consultation. We learn about your home, your goals, and your project timeline, then define the right approach for your lighting plan.
